January is the American Optometric Association's - Glaucoma Awareness Month!
So, we would like to take this opportunity to educate our patients and community on the symptoms, effects, and preventive measures when it comes to Glaucoma.
Glaucoma is an eye disease that affects millions of people around the world, and is the second leading cause of blindness according to the World Health Organization.
Glaucoma is characterized by an increase in pressure inside the eyeball which leads to damage of the optic nerve and loss of vision.
Glaucoma can affect people of all ages and backgrounds, including babies and young adults. In fact, the most common type of Glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, is considered a hereditary disease.
Glaucoma is often asymptomatic in the early stages, so it is important to have regular eye checkups, especially if you are over the age of 40 or have relatives who have had Glaucoma or a family history of the disease.
Symptoms of Glaucoma include peripheral or side vision loss, tunnel vision, eye pain, and seeing circles around lights.
While there is currently no cure for Glaucoma, loss of vision can be slowed down or even prevented through use of eye drops, general preventative care, and eye surgery.
Early detection is key to the prevention of vision loss caused by Glaucoma.
In addition to regular checkups and early detection, you can also take steps to prevent vision loss by improving your general health and lifestyle - such as eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.
