If you are often outdoors, surfing, fishing, or doing any type of activity that exposes you to the sun and wind, you may notice growths on the white part of your eyes. These growths are called pterygiums. Some of the common terms Pterygiums can become red, irritated, and bothersome. In moderate to severe cases, if the growth becomes bigger over the years, it can start to interfere with the vision.
If it does indeed become that significant, Dr. Punzal would then make the appropriate referral for a consultation to an Ophthalmologist for further evaluation / removal of the growth.
What can you do in the meantime? UV protection is highly recommended as it will protect your eyes from the wind, sun, salt air, and any other environmental exposures that could irritate your eyes.
Artificial tears is another recommendation and easily purchased over the counter. Keeping your eyes lubricated can reduce the symptoms you experience when your eyes are irritated. Last but not least, we recommend routine eye exams to further evaluate and treat diagnosis such as this. We hope to SEE you soon!
