Here at Punzal Vision, we are often asked; when should my child get their first eye exam? The answer is simple, while a child of any age can receive an eye examination, we recommend that kids get their first eye exam around six months old!
During your child’s first eye exam, the optometrist will examine your child’s overall eye health as well as the development of their eyes. Your eye doctor will also check for any underlying issues in your child’s vision to make sure that any concerns are discovered and addressed as early as possible.
Once your child has received their first eye examination to establish care, it is important to schedule an annual eye examination for your child. This allows for the eye doctor to track the progress of their visual development as well as to ensure that they have healthy eyes and their vision is supported in all aspects of their life.
If you have an older child that displays any signs of difficulty with their vision, such as having a hard time reading the white board in school, holding electronics or reading materials too close to their face, blinking and squinting frequently, or are being separated in academic level from the rest of their class due to an inability to see the materials properly - then it is recommended that you seek professional care for your child from an optometrist.
At Punzal Vision, we are a keiki friendly optometry practice on the Island of Kaua’i and we love to see children of all ages! Whether your child is currently experiencing issues with their vision, or you are looking to establish eye care and support for your infant or young child, we would love to see you!
